“The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.” (Ecclesiastes 10:15, KJV) This striking verse reminds us that success in territorial advancement is not automatic. It demands spiritual understanding. Before you can effectively pray for a city or take dominion over a territory, you must first ask: “Lord, show me the city, and show me how to enter the city.” Without this guidance, you may labor without results.
The Bible teaches that cities and territories are more than physical places; they are spiritual landscapes governed by unseen forces. Ephesians 6:12 reveals that, “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Every city has both a visible dimension (what we see with our natural eyes) and a spiritual dimension (what can only be discerned by the spirit).
In Genesis 28:10–17, Jacob stumbled upon a spiritual reality hidden behind a physical location. He saw a heavenly city structure involving five key elements that defined the spiritual environment: the altar, supernatural functionaries, the ladder, the portal, and divine authority. These five elements serve as a guide to spiritually mapping cities and forming strategic prayers. Let’s now walk through each of these five elements, what they mean in both the divine and demonic realms, and how they relate to spiritual mapping, and then develop a prayer you can use to cover your city.
One — Altar: Foundation of Spiritual Ownership
When Jacob laid his head on a stone and dreamed, that stone represented an altar. (Genesis 28:11) An altar in the spirit represents a meeting point between humanity and divinity. It is a place where covenants are established, maintained, or broken. Altars can be godly (where God meets man) or ungodly (where demons claim authority over a territory). In the divine realm, godly altars attract the presence of God, angelic activities, and blessings. In the demonic realm, satanic altars empower curses, oppression, and demonic traffic over a city. Every city is powered by the dominant altars raised within it—either consciously or unconsciously. Understanding this is crucial for spiritual mapping. When we walk into cities, we must discern the altars that dominate—whether they are financial greed, sexual immorality, injustice, idolatry, or genuine worship of the true God.
Modern Application: When planting churches, starting businesses, or even moving into a new city, recognizing the spiritual altars already built there can determine your success or failure. Without raising a superior altar of righteousness and worship, you cannot dislodge evil strongholds.
Prayer for Your City: “Lord, reveal to us the altars that govern our city. Expose every altar of darkness and raise a superior altar of righteousness, worship, and truth in this land. Let the blood of Jesus speak louder than every satanic covenant made over our streets, institutions, and hearts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Two — Supernatural Functionaries: Spiritual Workers Over Territories
In Jacob’s vision, he saw angels ascending and descending (Genesis 28:12). Notice that the angels ascended first, then descended. This suggests that the movement was initiated on earth, not heaven. In the divine realm, angels are supernatural functionaries who carry out God’s instructions (Psalm 103:20). They protect, deliver, strengthen, and administer justice.
In contrast, the demonic realm also has agents—evil spirits, principalities, and territorial demons that enforce Satan’s agenda. Understanding that cities are either under the influence of godly or demonic functionaries is essential for spiritual mapping. Some cities may appear prosperous, but are spiritually barren because demonic functionaries enforce spiritual blindness, rebellion, and injustice.
Modern Application: When planning citywide evangelism, church planting, or praying for urban transformation, you must understand that success requires releasing godly functionaries (angels) to replace demonic ones.
Prayer for Your City: “Father, release Your holy angels over our city. Let them ascend with our prayers and descend with Your answers. We bind every demonic agent assigned to oppose Your will in this city. We decree divine intervention, supernatural protection, and heavenly enforcement of righteousness over our land. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Three — The Ladder: The Connection Between Heaven and Earth
Jacob also saw a ladder stretching from earth to heaven (Genesis 28:12). This ladder symbolizes the connection between the natural and spiritual realms. In the divine context, the ladder is the medium through which prayers ascend and blessings descend. Jesus referred to Himself as this ladder in John 1:51, indicating that He is the only access between God and man. In the demonic context, satanic ladders also exist—illicit spiritual portals opened by sin, idolatry, occult practices, and rebellion. These ungodly ladders connect cities to demonic sources of influence, bringing corruption, division, and death.
Modern Application: In spiritual mapping, recognize whether a city’s atmosphere is under an open heaven (godly ladder) or dark oppression (satanic ladder). When a city has a godly ladder established, revival and divine favor flow easily.
Prayer for Your City: “Lord Jesus, we establish You as the ladder over our city. Let there be a divine connection between our city and heaven. Close every ladder of darkness opened through sin, injustice, and idolatry. Open the heavens over our city for revival, renewal, and restoration. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Four — Portal: Access Points in the Spirit Realm
Jacob saw a portal—an opening where the ladder touched heaven (Genesis 28:12). Portals are gateways through which spiritual traffic flows. In the divine order, portals facilitate an increased manifestation of God’s presence, angelic assistance, and divine revelation. Examples include Bethel (Genesis 28:17) and Jerusalem (Psalm 132:13–14).
In the demonic realm, there are also portals—points where darkness invades because of sustained sin, occult practices, or defilement. Demonic portals in cities can be physical locations such as certain neighborhoods, entertainment hubs, or monuments dedicated to ungodly purposes.
Modern Application: If a portal of darkness is open in your city, intercession must be focused on closing it. If a portal to heaven is open, it must be maintained through righteousness, prayer, and worship.
Prayer for Your City: “Father, open divine portals over our city. Let Your glory come down and transform every sphere of society. We shut every portal of darkness established through rebellion and sin. Let the light of Your presence flood every street, home, and institution. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Five — Authority: The Manifest Presence of God
Finally, Jacob saw the Lord Himself standing at the top of the ladder (Genesis 28:13–15). God’s standing position indicated His supreme authority over the city and territory. In the divine realm, authority comes from a covenant relationship—Jacob inherited the covenant of Abraham. Divine authority establishes dominion, not mere survival. It brings order, justice, peace, and lasting transformation.
In the demonic realm, false authorities also exist—territorial spirits, ancestral spirits, and counterfeit rulers who attempt to govern cities outside of God’s will. Remember in Psalms 24 the gates (authorities) resisting the entry of the king of glory?
Modern Application: If God is not recognized as the ultimate authority over a city, the city will default to demonic control. That’s why we must enthrone Christ through prayer, evangelism, and righteous leadership.
Prayer for Your City: “Lord, establish Your throne in our city. Let every counterfeit throne collapse under the weight of Your glory. Rule in the hearts of our leaders, in our churches, in our schools, and in our homes. We submit our city to Your divine authority and covenant blessings. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Conclusion: How to See Cities from the Spirit Realm
Jacob’s experience teaches us that a city is not just a collection of buildings and people. It is a complex spiritual environment shaped by altars, spiritual functionaries, ladders, portals, and ultimate authority. When you want to start a church, a business, a ministry, or simply live in a city, you must discern its spiritual infrastructure. You must pray, “Lord, show me the city and show me how to enter it,” because without divine insight, as Ecclesiastes 10:15 warns, all your labor could be in vain.
True territorial takeover is about more than physical activity; it is about spiritual dominion. Every believer must become a spiritual surveyor, mapping their cities and territories under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As 2 Corinthians 3:17 declares, “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” Only the Holy Spirit can guide us into all truth (John 16:13), reveal the unseen dimensions, and give us the authority to enforce God’s purposes in our cities. The science of spiritual mapping and prayerful invasion of territories is not taught in many seminaries—it is taught in the School of the Holy Spirit. Seek to be a student there.
Final Prayer: “Lord, train our hands for war and our fingers for battle. Open our eyes to see the spiritual structures of our cities. Help us raise righteous altars, release angelic hosts, establish divine ladders, open heavenly portals, and enthrone Your supreme authority over our cities. Let Your kingdom come and Your will be done in our cities as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
