EP 7 – Deliverance of the Woman with the Spirit of Infirmity

This powerful case study found in Luke 13:10-17 reveals how Jesus brought deliverance to a woman who had been bound for eighteen years, as we read below:
“And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.
And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day…
The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite…
And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.”
(Luke 13:10–17, KJV)
Through this encounter, we learn 6 deep truths about deliverance, spiritual bondage, religion, and Jesus’ compassion.
Lesson One: Prolonged Bondage Does Not Mean God Has Forgotten a Person
This woman had been bound for eighteen years. That is a long time of suffering, limitation, and pain. “And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him…” (Luke 13:12). This verse shows that heaven had not forgotten her situation. Her deliverance began the moment she came into the divine focus. This reminds us that God’s timing is not the same as human timing. Just like the man at the gate called Beautiful in Acts 3, God may allow long waiting seasons, but He never forgets His people.
Jesus also showed that human value is greater than religious rules. He compared her worth to animals used for work and showed that people matter more than tradition. God values His people more than religious rules. Jesus prioritized her freedom over Sabbath restrictions. This shows that God’s attention is greater than your duration of suffering.
Real Life Application:
- Do not interpret delay as abandonment.
- Trust God’s timing even in long-term struggles.
- Remember that God prioritizes people over systems and rules.
Lesson Two: Not All Sickness Is Purely Physical
“And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years…” (Luke 13:11). In this verse, we see that Jesus clearly identified her condition as a spirit of infirmity. This shows that some physical conditions have spiritual roots. Her bent posture was not only medical but also a spiritual oppression.
In Luke 13:16, we see that Jesus also said that Satan had bound her, revealing that some long-term sicknesses are connected to spiritual warfare. However, we must be balanced because not every sickness is spiritual, but neither should we ignore spiritual causes when they are present, because some physical conditions have spiritual roots that require spiritual intervention.
Real Life Application:
- Do not ignore medical help, but also do not ignore spiritual discernment.
- Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom when dealing with persistent conditions.
- Learn to recognize when spiritual warfare is involved.
Lesson Three: Religious Environments Do Not Automatically Bring Freedom
“And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation…” (Luke 13:14). This woman was bound inside a synagogue, a place of worship. This shows that being in a religious environment does not automatically guarantee deliverance. She had likely attended services many times while still bound. This reveals that exposure to religion is not the same as encountering the power of God because religion without power cannot break bondage.
Real Life Application:
- Do not confuse church attendance with spiritual freedom.
- Seek a personal encounter with Jesus, not just religious activity.
- Desire the power of God, not just the form of godliness.
Lesson Four: Deliverance Often Requires Personal Encounter, Not Distance Ministry
“He called her to him…” (Luke 13:12). Jesus did not heal her from a distance in this case. He called her forward and even laid His hands on her (Luke 13:13). This shows that sometimes deliverance often requires direct divine encounter.
She could not help herself because the Bible says she could in no wise lift herself (Luke 13:11), and this means she needed intervention, not instruction. Jesus was moved by compassion, not pressure or timing. When He spoke, her deliverance was immediate and complete. From this, we learn that some deliverances require direct encounter with Jesus, not human effort.
Real Life Application:
- Bring your burdens directly to Jesus in prayer.
- Recognize your inability to fix deep spiritual issues alone.
- Expect sudden breakthroughs when God intervenes.
Lesson Five: Deliverance Can Involve Both Spiritual Authority and Physical Action
“And he laid his hands on her…” (Luke 13:13). Jesus combined spoken authority with physical action. He laid hands on her and spoke words of release. This shows that deliverance can involve both spiritual command and physical expression. Jesus did not negotiate with the bondage. He declared freedom with authority, saying, “Woman, thou art loosed.” (Luke 13:12), and this shows that deliverance operates through authority, not negotiation.
Real Life Application:
- Speak God’s Word with faith and authority.
- Do not dialogue with bondage or oppression.
- Trust the power of Jesus’ command over your life.
Lesson Six: True Deliverance Always Produces Visible Testimony and Community Impact
True deliverance produces restoration, testimony, and visible transformation. Her deliverance was immediate, visible, and undeniable. She was not only healed but restored. Her posture changed, her dignity returned, and her confidence was renewed. Her response was worship. She glorified God, showing that true deliverance produces gratitude and praise. “And immediately she was made straight, and glorified God…” (Luke 13:13)
However, not everyone celebrated her miracle. The religious leader reacted with anger, revealing that tradition can sometimes resist freedom. Jesus exposed hypocrisy, and the crowd responded with joy while the opposition was put to shame.
Real Life Application:
- Let your deliverance become a testimony that glorifies God.
- Expect that not everyone will understand your breakthrough.
- Stand firm in your freedom even when others resist it.
- Use your healing as a witness of God’s power.
Conclusion:
The deliverance of the woman with the spirit of infirmity reveals the compassion, authority, and wisdom of Jesus. It shows us that bondage can be long, hidden, and even religiously surrounded, yet still be broken by the power of Christ. Jesus still sees, Jesus still calls, and Jesus still sets free.
