EP 8 – The Deliverance of the Mute Man

The deliverance of the mute man is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew 9:32–34. The Bible says:
“As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil.
And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.
But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.”
(Matthew 9:32–34, KJV)
This short passage may appear simple, but it contains powerful truths about deliverance ministry, spiritual warfare, opposition, authority, compassion, and the manifestation of the Kingdom of God. In only three verses, we see a bound man restored, a crowd amazed, and religious leaders offended. This case study reveals both the beauty and the battle that often surrounds deliverance ministry.
Lesson One: Intercession and Compassion Fuel Deliverance
“They brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil” (Matthew 9:32). One of the first things we notice in this story is that the mute man did not come to Jesus alone. Other people brought him. This teaches us that sometimes deliverance ministry often begins through the compassion and intercession of others. Sometimes people who are oppressed are too weak, discouraged, confused, ashamed, or spiritually bound to seek help on their own. God may use family members, friends, pastors, or intercessors to bring them closer to freedom.
This verse also shows the importance of compassion in ministry. Jesus focused on helping the afflicted man rather than arguing with critics. His attention was on restoring the oppressed, not defending Himself before religious people. Deliverance ministry must always prioritize people in need over arguments.
Real Life Application
- Deliverance ministry is deeply connected to compassion. Many people are set free because someone cared enough to pray, invite, fast, counsel, or stand in the gap for them. Intercession often becomes the bridge between bondage and freedom.
- For this reason, never underestimate the power of bringing someone to Jesus through prayer, encouragement, counseling, or support. Some people are waiting for someone to care enough to help them. Also, when ministering to others, focus on helping people rather than trying to impress or win debates.
Lesson Two: Deliverance Ministry Is About Restoration
“And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake…” (Matthew 9:33). The demon had stolen the man’s ability to speak, but after deliverance, his voice returned immediately. This teaches us that deliverance ministry is about restoration. Satan steals, binds, suppresses, and destroys, but Jesus restores what bondage has taken away.
This story also reveals that Satan often tries to silence destiny. The demon made the man mute, but Jesus restored his speech. In the same way, spiritual oppression can attempt to silence prayer, worship, preaching, testimony, creativity, and calling.
The restoration in this story was not only physical. The man regained his ability to communicate, connect socially, express himself, and function normally again. Many people lose things spiritually before they lose them physically, for bondage can silence joy, peace, purpose, confidence, worship, prayer, and even identity.
Real Life Application
- Many believers are alive physically but silenced spiritually. Some no longer pray, worship, dream, testify, or pursue their calling because oppression has weakened their spiritual voice. Jesus still restores voices today. He restores passion, confidence, purpose, and boldness.
- Deliverance is not merely about casting out demons. It is about restoring lives. Jesus does not only remove darkness; He restores dignity, voice, identity, purpose, and spiritual function.
- This story also reminds us that spiritual warfare is real. Jesus confronted an actual demonic force affecting the man’s life. This means that deliverance ministry is not symbolic or imaginary, for it involves confronting real spiritual oppression through dependence on God.
Lesson Three: Deliverance Results in Visible Manifestations
“And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled…” (Matthew 9:33). Deliverance is spiritual, but its effects often become visible emotionally, mentally, physically, religiously, culturally, or behaviorally. In this case study, the evidence of deliverance was public and undeniable in the following ways:
- The mute man immediately began to speak.
- Exposure of religious pride. The Pharisees rejected the miracle even though a man had been healed. Religion without compassion can become hostile toward genuine freedom. Instead of celebrating restoration, they criticized Jesus.
- This miracle also became a public testimony. The crowds marvelled and declared, “It was never so seen in Israel.” Testimonies strengthen faith and reveal the reality of God’s power.
- At the same time, this deliverance attracted opposition. While the multitudes celebrated, the Pharisees accused Jesus of operating by demonic power. Deliverance ministry will often produce both amazement and criticism because not everyone understands spiritual warfare.
- The miracle also exposed the failure of empty tradition. Many Jewish teachers believed mute spirits were impossible to cast out because they relied heavily on rituals and methods. Yet Jesus cast out the demon effortlessly. Human traditions should never limit what God can do.
- Finally, the miracle challenged unbelief. The crowd had never witnessed authority like this before. Deliverance reveals the reality of God’s Kingdom in practical ways that challenge doubt and skepticism.
Deliverance ministry often reveals hidden spiritual realities. It exposes bondage, religious pride, unbelief, and powerless traditions while simultaneously revealing the power of God.
Real Life Application
- Believers should not hide what God has done in their lives. Testimonies encourage others and glorify God. At the same time, ministers should prepare themselves for criticism and misunderstanding. Opposition does not always mean something is wrong. Sometimes, it is evidence that spiritual darkness is being confronted.
- This story also teaches us that deliverance exposes invisible bondage. Outwardly, the man simply appeared mute, but Jesus discerned a spiritual cause behind the condition. This reminds us that some struggles may have deeper spiritual dimensions behind them. Discernment is therefore essential in ministry.
Lesson Four: Deliverance Demonstrates the Superiority of Jesus and the Kingdom of God
“It was never so seen in Israel.” (Matthew 9:33). At the time of Jesus, many rabbis believed mute demons were extremely difficult or impossible to cast out because they could not obtain the demon’s name through speech. Their methods depended heavily on rituals and formulas. Yet Jesus cast out the demon effortlessly.
This miracle demonstrated the superiority of Jesus over darkness and over powerless religious traditions. Jesus did not struggle with the demon. He did not rely on complicated rituals or techniques. His authority alone was enough.
The crowd recognized that heaven’s power had invaded earthly bondage. Deliverance became evidence that the Kingdom of God was present among them. Every genuine deliverance reveals that the Kingdom of God is stronger than the kingdom of darkness.
Real Life Application
- Deliverance ministry is not based on human methods, formulas, rituals, or performance. It flows from the authority of Jesus Christ and the power of God’s Kingdom.
- This story also reveals an important shift between the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, God often delivered His people from external bondage and oppression. In the New Testament, Jesus began removing bondage from within people through deliverance ministry. Jesus came not only to forgive sin but also to destroy the works of the devil in people’s lives, according to 1 John 3:8.
- No bondage is too difficult for Jesus. Some situations that appear impossible to people are simple before God. Believers must place their confidence in Christ rather than in techniques, traditions, or human ability.
Lesson Five: Deliverance Ministry Requires Humility, Readiness, and Discernment
In Matthew 9:32-34, we see that Jesus demonstrated discernment by recognizing the spiritual root behind the man’s condition. Outwardly, the issue appeared physical, but Jesus perceived the spiritual bondage behind it. This teaches us that deliverance ministry requires wisdom and spiritual sensitivity.
Jesus also demonstrated readiness. The afflicted man was brought to Him, and He was prepared to minister immediately. Deliverance ministers must remain spiritually prepared through prayer, holiness, dependence on God, and intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
At the same time, Jesus demonstrated humility. He did not seek personal glory or self-promotion after the miracle. His focus remained on helping people and advancing God’s Kingdom.
Real Life Application
- Effective deliverance ministry requires more than boldness. It requires spiritual discernment, consistent preparation, humility, compassion, and dependence on God.
- Believers involved in ministry should cultivate prayer, humility, spiritual sensitivity, and integrity. Deliverance ministry is not about showcasing spiritual power. It is about glorifying Jesus and helping people find freedom.
Conclusion:
The deliverance of the mute man teaches us that deliverance ministry is real, powerful, and deeply connected to the advancement of God’s Kingdom. Every time bondage breaks and a captive person finds freedom, the Kingdom of God becomes visible on earth.
It also reveals Christ’s absolute authority over demons, exposes the limitations of human tradition, and reminds us that freedom in Jesus produces visible transformation. Jesus still restores passion, confidence, purpose, and boldness today.
This case study also teaches us that deliverance ministry will attract both amazement and opposition. Some will glorify God while others will criticize. Yet the mission remains the same: setting captives free through the authority of Jesus Christ.
