“But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem…” (Hebrews 12:22, KJV)
This verse invites New Testament believers into a spiritual reality vastly different from the Old Testament experience on Mount Sinai. Unlike the fearful and distant encounter with God at Sinai, Mount Zion symbolizes grace, closeness, and a transformative relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The following verses, Hebrews 12:22-24, reveal that on Mount Zion we have the backup of six heavenly witnesses, each offering a unique voice that supports and strengthens our prayers. These voices transform our petitions into incense rising before God’s throne (Revelation 5:8; Psalm 141:2). In this post, we will explore how to leverage these voices to ensure our prayers are backed by divine authority.
Voice One: The Innumerable Company of Angels
Angels are celestial beings created by God to serve Him and minister to His people. Hebrews 1:14 describes them as “ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation.” They are not passive observers but active participants in God’s divine plans. Their presence on Mount Zion signifies their readiness to act on behalf of God’s people. Angels play a crucial role in carrying out God’s will, which includes delivering messages, providing protection, and engaging in spiritual warfare. When you pray, you can specifically ask for angelic intervention:
- Protection and Guidance: Psalm 91:11 assures us, “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.” Pray for angels to guard and guide you and your loved ones.
- Spiritual Warfare: In times of spiritual conflict, invoke the assistance of angels to fight on your behalf, reinforcing your prayers with heavenly power.
- For Example: “Father, I ask You to send Your angels to surround my family, protecting us from all harm. Let Your angels go before us, preparing the way and guiding our steps. Amen.”
Voice Two: The General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn
This is the collective body of believers, both those on earth and those who have entered paradise (Luke 16:19-31). This assembly includes all who are redeemed by Christ, forming a spiritual family united in faith. The unity of believers amplifies the power of individual prayers as supported by Matthew 18:20 which states, “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” The support of this spiritual assembly strengthens our petitions in the following ways:
- Corporate Prayer: Engage in prayer with fellow believers to magnify your requests before God.
- Intercession: Be encouraged by the knowledge that you are part of a global body interceding for each other, which enhances confidence in your prayers.
- For example: “Lord, I join my prayers with the global body of believers, standing in agreement for Your will to be done in my life and the lives of others. Amen.”
Voice Three: God, the Judge of All
God, the ultimate Judge, presides over the heavenly court with righteousness and justice (Psalms 89:14; Psalms 48:1-2). His role as Judge ensures that justice is served and His divine purposes are fulfilled. God’s role as Judge is pivotal in securing justice and fulfilling divine plans through:
- Presenting Your Case (Psalms 41:21; Isaiah 1:18): Lay out your needs and desires before God, trusting His righteous judgment.
- Appealing for Justice (Isaiah 49:24-26; Luke 18): In situations of injustice, appeal to God for intervention and vindication.
- Appealing for mercy (Psalms 51): In cases where we are found guilty and deserving of punishment.
- For Example: “Righteous Judge, I present my case before You. I ask for Your justice in this situation, trusting that You will vindicate me according to Your will. Amen.”
Voice Four: The Spirits of Just Men Made Perfect
These are the spirits of the righteous who have been perfected through faith. They form the “cloud of witnesses” mentioned in Hebrews 12:1, whose lives inspire and encourage us to persevere in our faith journey. The testimonies of these righteous individuals encourage and strengthen our faith in the following ways:
- Draw Inspiration: Reflect on the lives of biblical figures and saints who demonstrated unwavering faith.
- Seek Encouragement: Their stories remind us of God’s faithfulness and motivate us to persist in prayer.
- For Example: “Lord, as I reflect on the faith of those who have gone before me, I am encouraged to trust in Your promises. Strengthen my faith as I continue in prayer. Amen.”
Voice Five: Jesus, the Mediator of the New Covenant
Jesus is the Mediator who bridges the gap between God and humanity. Through His sacrifice, He established a new covenant, granting believers direct access to God (Galatians 3:13-14). His role is central to our ability to pray effectively. Jesus’ mediation is fundamental to our prayer life in many ways such as:
- Pray in His Name: Jesus instructed us to pray in His name, which grants us authority and direct access to the Father.
- Claim the New Covenant: Stand on the promises of the new covenant, assured of forgiveness, grace, and mercy.
- For Example: “Heavenly Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus, my Mediator. I thank You for the new covenant and the access it gives me to Your throne of grace. Amen.”
Voice Six: The Blood of Sprinkling
The “blood of sprinkling” refers to the sacrificial blood of Jesus, which speaks of better things than that of Abel (Hebrews 12:24). This blood symbolizes the atonement and redemption provided by Christ’s sacrifice. The blood of Jesus has a powerful voice that advocates for mercy and grace and you can leverage it in prayer through:
- Plead the Blood: Invoke the power of Jesus’ blood in your prayers for protection, cleansing, and victory.
- Claim Its Promises: Stand on the promises secured by His blood, including redemption, healing, and reconciliation.
- For Example: “Lord Jesus, I plead Your blood over my life, my family, and every situation I face. Let Your blood speak better things on my behalf. Amen.”
In conclusion, Jesus confidently instructed us to “always pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1) because He knew the abundant resources available on Mount Zion. These six divine voices—the angels, the assembly of believers, God the Judge, the spirits of the righteous, and Jesus the Mediator—speak in our favor, ensuring our prayers are heard and answered for the prayers of righteous men avail much (James 5:16). In addition, Isaiah 56:7 promises that God’s Holy mountain of Zion shall be called a house of prayer. By engaging with these heavenly witnesses, we access the full power and provision of God, securing breakthroughs in our prayers.
