Jesus Had Both Power and authority
Jesus is the ultimate template of the chosen ones and everyone who made a commentary about His ministry on Earth pointed to the presence of these two things – Power and authority – as supported by:
- Luke 4:32-36 – Jesus had just delivered a man from an unclean devil in the synagogue and in verse 36 we see the commentary of those that had witnessed that – “ And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.”
- Mark 11:27-28 – The chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to Jesus to question this: “By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?” They did not doubt the miracles they recognized that there was a power and authority behind the ability to do them.
- John 3 – Nicodemus a recognized, distinguished, and noble man in the society did not come to challenge Jesus doctrine but to acknowledge that “no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.” (John 3:2).
- Acts 10:38 – Apostle Peter making a commentary about the ministry of Jesus he said that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38)
- Luke 4:18 – Jesus Himself describing his ministry, He acknowledged how it was a ministry that needed power and authority to “preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.”

Why the Need for Power and Authority?
We can find the answer to this question in Luke 9:1 (“Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.”) The reason Jesus gave His disciples power and authority before he sent them was that their mission was spiritual. He sent them as deliverance ministers and liberation agents. Spiritual business can only be accomplished with spiritual tools for:
- 2 Corinthians 10:4 – “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.”
- Ephesians 6:12 – “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
- 1 John 3:8 – “The purpose the Son of God was manifested, was that he might destroy the works of the devil.”
As a chosen one your job is not intellectual that you shall appeal to people with your mind, nor is it emotional that you shall appeal to people with your prowess of use of words to manipulate emotions…NO … your job is spiritual for it involves pulling down, rooting out, destroying, and throwing down strongholds’ of darkness, and in their place you build and plant for the kingdom of God. “See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.” (Jeremiah 1:10)
What is the difference between Power and Authority?
Power is the capacity or ability to perform signs, miracles, and wonders. Authority is the legal right to do so. That means, while power asks, can it be done? Authority asks, should it be done?
- For example, a surgeon has the power to operate on patients because of their expertise, but if the patient does not give the surgeon permission to, they lack the authority to continue with the procedure.
- Another example is a traffic police has the power to control traffic but without the right uniform, they are likely to be ignored by the motorists.
In the Bible, the story of the sons of Sceva in Acts 19 best illustrates this. They had a form of power since they were renowned Jewish exorcists, but they lacked divine authorization. They attempted to cast out demons using the name of Jesus whom Paul preached—but the demons responded violently, saying, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?” (Acts 19:15). The mistake they made was that they tried to imitate authority without connection to the source and power that Paul exercised.
- This is why they are known as vagabonds – a wanderer, rolling stones, or fence sitters with one foot on one side and the other foot on another.
- Eventually, they become what Jesus called workers of iniquity in Matthew 7:21–23. This kind do mighty work in His name but they operate without His authority, knowledge, or approval.
- These are spiritual freeloaders, unauthorized agents who engage in spiritual business without heaven’s endorsement much like the sons of Aaron Nadab and Abihu who God killed for doing unauthorized priestly business which God called ‘strange fires.’
The way to be safe from being a spiritual vagabond, worker of iniquity, or burner of strange fire is by committing to fellowship, consecration, and obedience to God.
- Mark 3:14 – And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach.”
- From this verse underline these two words – should and might – should is their daily job (to be with Him).
- Whether He sends you or not is a might (a probability) for God only deposits his authority on intimates.
- Acts 4:13 provides a clear example: “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” Their power and authority was evident because of their relationship with Christ.
Satan Has Power but Lacks Authority
Satan has power as supported by several scriptures such as:
- Luke 10:19 – “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” In this verse, Jesus used metaphors to reveal to departments of power in the kingdom of darkness – scorpion which represents witchcraft, and serpents which represents divination.
- Luke 4:6 – “And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.”
- Romans 11:29 – “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.” Satan was a top-ranking angel Lucifer and there is no record of where God stripped him off his powers.
Although Satan has power, He does not have authority to use it unless all the judicial and legal requirements for its use are sustained as supported by:
- Colossians 2:15 – “And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” This word ‘spoiled’ in Greek is ‘apekduomai’ a name for a military surrender protocol in the Roman army for defeated opponents.
- Revelation 12:10 – “For the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” Before Satan attacks a believer, he must ask for permission from God for “All power is given unto me in heaven and earth” has been given to our Lord Jesus Christ and God has made us “joint heirs with Christ”. (Romans 8:17).
- Isaiah 49:24 – “Shall the prey be taken from the mighty or the lawful captive delivered?” What the devil can do is make us lawful captives- “Individuals who are held under spiritual bondage due to violating spiritual laws, thereby giving the devil or other evil spirits the legal right to hold them captive.”
That means the devil does not have the authority or legal right to attack a believer but he can find a legal reason to put a believer under bondage:
- A clear example of this is found in Luke 13:11–18, where Jesus encountered a woman bound by a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years.
- Though she was a “daughter of Abraham” and legally entitled to freedom (Galatians 3), Satan had found a legitimate reason to bind her.
- In this case, Jesus acted with divine authority, like a law enforcement agent, overturning the enemy’s grounds and executing justice.
- This story demonstrates that while the devil may operate with power, he only gains authority when the ground is given—and it takes someone walking in true spiritual authority to revoke that claim and enforce heaven’s justice.
- Hence, we must live like Apostle Paul advised in Ephesians 4:27 – “do not give the devil a foothold” – it might be a small crack but this skilled deceiver knows how to turn footholds into strongholds. In Matthew 12:43-45 Jesus illustrated this with a story of how a demon comes with 7 others wicked than it to overpower a territory.
Conclusion
So what are the 2 Things Chosen Ones Have That Hell Fears? It is power and authority. Every chosen one must have a balance of these two – power and authority – for power without authority can be dangerous and ineffective and authority without power is spiritually sterile. Jesus possessed both, and this is why His ministry was unmatched in both impact and legacy. If we, as God’s chosen ones, desire to walk in true kingdom influence, we must have both power and authority. The way to get these two is by building fellowship or intimacy with God and submitting ourselves to consecration, and obedience to God, until we are trusted to carry both the power and authority of God.
