“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.” (Ephesians 4:11, KJV)
This verse reveals that there are five roles or offices in the five-fold ministry—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. The goal of these ministries is to perfect the saints and to edify the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12). One of the things that men and women called into these offices encounter while trying to achieve these two roles is combating spiritual forces of darkness. For this reason, anyone called into these offices must understand spiritual warfare. Warfare in the body of Christ can be explained from various perspectives, such as the spiritual warfare lexicon, the mountain metaphor, the science of altars dimension, and many others. In this blog post, we will explore one more perspective—the symbolism of animals. Each role within the five-fold ministry carries a dimension of animal associations, with each office linked to a specific animal as summarized below.
#1 – The Sheep
Pastors are often likened to shepherds, tasked with protecting and nurturing a flock of sheep. The sheep represent the congregation—vulnerable, needing care, and prone to wandering. Pastors embody the protective spiritual covering that shields believers from spiritual attacks, fostering growth, healing, and restoration within the community.
In the realm of spiritual warfare, sheep signify vulnerability, requiring a pastor’s constant vigilance. The enemy, depicted as wolves in Matthew 7:15, seeks to scatter and devour the flock. A pastor’s ability to discern danger and gather the sheep into the safety of the spiritual community reflects their vital role in defending against these attacks (John 10:11-13). The pastor’s dedication mirrors Christ’s sacrificial love as the Good Shepherd, emphasizing the importance of spiritual nurturing in times of spiritual conflict.
#2 – The Serpents and Scorpions
The prophetic office is uniquely equipped to confront serpents and scorpions, which symbolize witchcraft, deception, and hidden spiritual dangers. Jesus explicitly linked these creatures to demonic forces in Luke 10:19: “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.”
Serpents represent cunning and deception (Genesis 3:1), requiring the prophet’s sharp discernment to expose lies and reveal God’s truth. Scorpions, with their venomous sting, embody spiritual attacks that aim to paralyze and weaken. Prophets navigate these dangers with wisdom and insight, equipped by God to identify and dismantle demonic strategies.
The prophetic ministry acts as a spiritual radar, detecting and neutralizing threats before they manifest. Their ability to “see” into the spiritual realm enables them to counteract witchcraft and demonic schemes, bringing clarity and divine direction to the body of Christ.
#3 – The Elephants
Apostles carry the spiritual authority and strength comparable to an elephant, a creature known for its immense power and dominance. Elephants are relentless in their ability to clear paths and break barriers, symbolizing the apostolic role in breaking spiritual strongholds and advancing God’s kingdom.
In spiritual warfare, apostles are called to demolish entrenched resistance, akin to elephants uprooting obstacles in their path. This is evident in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5: “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.” Apostles establish spiritual foundations and claim territories for Christ, confronting principalities and powers in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12).
Their ability to operate with territorial dominance ensures that no demonic force can maintain control where God has called them to work. Just as elephants lead their herds with wisdom and strength, apostles lead the church into new territories of faith and influence.
#4 – The Goats
Evangelists deal with goats, creatures known for their agility and ability to thrive in difficult terrain. Goats symbolize the evangelist’s mission to go into spiritually barren and resistant areas, reaching the lost with the gospel.
In spiritual warfare, goats represent resilience and adaptability. Evangelists confront the ruggedness of spiritual apathy and rebellion, bringing the light of Christ into dark places. Like the goat that climbs steep cliffs, evangelists persist in their mission, undeterred by obstacles or rejection. Mark 16:15 underscores their calling: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” Their role involves reclaiming lost souls, breaking the enemy’s hold on lives, and bringing people into the fold of God’s kingdom.
#5 – The Foxes
Teachers deal with foxes, creatures known for their cunning and attention to detail. In spiritual warfare, foxes represent subtle threats, such as false doctrines and deceptive teachings. Teachers are uniquely equipped to counteract these dangers by grounding believers in the truth of God’s Word.
Song of Solomon 2:15 warns about “the little foxes that spoil the vines,” highlighting the teacher’s role in addressing seemingly small issues that can undermine spiritual growth. Teachers use their deep understanding of Scripture to expose lies and cultivate a solid foundation of truth within the church. Their precision and wisdom ensure that the body of Christ remains rooted in sound doctrine, effectively countering the enemy’s attempts to distort the truth.
In conclusion, the five-fold ministry is not only a framework for building the church but also a divine strategy for engaging in spiritual warfare. Each office, symbolized by a specific animal, reflects a unique aspect of God’s plan to equip His people for victory. Pastors protect and nurture the flock; prophets discern and dismantle hidden dangers; apostles establish dominion and break strongholds; evangelists reclaim the lost; and teachers guard the truth. Together, they represent a unified force against the powers of darkness, advancing God’s kingdom on earth.
