In the Book of Romans, Paul masterfully lays out the spiritual journey every believer undertakes—a journey from spiritual infancy to maturity. The letter serves as a roadmap for forgiven sinners becoming saints in Christ. In other words, the book of Romans is a spiritual roadmap, guiding Christians step by step as they grow in their faith and become more Christlike. Let’s explore 12 crucial steps or stages along this pathway:
STAGE ONE: CHAPTERS 1 & 2: Acknowledging the Power of the Gospel
The first step is recognizing that the gospel is the power of God that leads to salvation. In Romans 1 and 2, Paul declares that the gospel reveals God’s righteousness and sets the foundation for everything that follows. It is through faith in this good news that our spiritual journey begins. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last.” (Romans 1:16-17)
STAGE TWO: CHAPTERS 3 & 4: Facing the Reality of Sin

In this step, we learn to put others before ourselves and build a spirit of community. “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment…so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” (Romans 12:3-5)
