“Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised.” (Hebrews 10:23)
When someone asks, “What do you do for a living?” most people respond with their job titles—teacher, engineer, artist, or entrepreneur. But for Christians, our ultimate “profession” is not tied to earthly occupations but to our faith. Just like a doctor practices medicine or a teacher imparts knowledge, Christians are called to live out their faith daily. This is the essence of our calling, our “profession” in the spiritual sense. Hebrews 10:23 reminds us to hold tightly to this profession, declaring that our faith is not just something we claim but something we actively live out because of the 5 reasons below:
#1 – We Live by Faith, Not by Sight
The Bible says, “Now the just shall live by faith” (Hebrews 10:38). Faith is not a passive belief but an active trust that shapes every aspect of our lives. Revelation 12:11 reveals that the saints overcame the dragon by the blood of the Lamb, the word of their testimony, and their perseverance. Our testimony—the daily profession of our faith—is as vital as the blood of Jesus in spiritual warfare. Just as we put on clothes daily, we are called to continually “put on” the armor of God (Ephesians 6:11). This ongoing act of faith equips us to stand firm against the enemy. Profession here is not merely about words but about an unwavering trust in the finished work of Christ, reinforced through prayer, decrees, and declarations.
#5 – Faith Is a Legacy
Faith is not just for us; it’s a gift we pass on to future generations. Timothy’s faith, nurtured by his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5), demonstrates how spiritual inheritance works. Similarly, Caleb asked for Hebron, the same mountain tied to Abraham’s sacrifice, showcasing the generational blessings of faith. Jacob’s encounter with God at Bethel (Genesis 28:10-22) was rooted in the altar his grandfather Abraham built. In the same way, when we profess our faith consistently, we establish spiritual legacies that bless those who come after us.
#6 – Faith Gives Purpose to Every Role
Whatever earthly profession we hold, faith transforms it into a ministry. Colossians 3:23 encourages us to work “heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Whether we are educators, caregivers, or business owners, we represent Christ in our work. Our profession of faith is evident in how we treat others, how we handle challenges, and how we steward our resources. Living by faith means seeing every role as an opportunity to glorify God.
