Deliverance is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a new walk with God. Deliverance happens when we are in Christ. Victory happens when Christ is in us. These two truths are closely connected, but they are not the same. The truth is that deliverance must be sustained, and victory must be lived out daily. God does not just want us to be set free; He wants us to stay free.

Sustaining Deliverance (Being in Christ)

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” To be in Christ means we have been included in Him. It is like placing a pen inside a notebook. Whatever happens to the notebook happens to the pen. When Jesus died, we died with Him. When He rose, we rose with Him. When He sat down in heavenly places, we too were seated with Him spiritually, as written in Ephesians 2:6, “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” This is the foundation of deliverance. Being in Christ means that our old sinful nature has been broken, and the enemy no longer has a legal hold over us. Deliverance sets us free from what once held us captive.

Walking in Victory (Christ is in us)

Victory happens when Christ is in us. When we accepted Jesus, His Spirit came to dwell inside our hearts. The Holy Spirit made His home in us. That means we now carry the power and presence of God everywhere we go. Colossians 1:27 says, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Deliverance is what God did for us, but victory is what God does through us. Sustaining deliverance requires a lifestyle of spiritual discipline, for freedom must be guarded through practical actions, such as:

  • Stay in the Word. The Word of God keeps your spiritual foundation strong. When Jesus was tempted by the devil, He responded with Scripture. That is our weapon too.
  • Live a life of prayer. Prayer keeps your connection to God active. It is in prayer that you receive strength, clarity, and direction.
  • Stay connected to a community of believers. Isolation is one of the enemy’s traps. Having spiritual mentors, prayer partners, and church fellowship helps you grow and stay accountable.
  • Avoid old environments. After deliverance, going back to the same friends, habits, or places that once led you into bondage can open doors again. Freedom is sustained by wisdom.
  • Keep your heart pure. Forgiveness, humility, and love are powerful shields against the enemy’s attacks. Bitterness or pride can reopen doors that deliverance once closed.
  • Staying sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading: The Holy Spirit is our greatest ally in sustaining deliverance. He is the one who guides us, strengthens us, and warns us when we are drifting from God’s will. Think of Him as your personal coach who helps you stay on track. For instance, if He nudges you not to watch a certain movie, visit a certain place, or entertain a certain conversation, obey immediately. Those small steps of obedience protect your freedom.

Victory is not automatic; it is intentional. Every day, we choose whether to feed the Spirit or the flesh. Think of someone who once struggled with addiction. After receiving deliverance, they feel light and joyful. But if they return to the same crowd, listen to the same music, and visit the same places, temptation will return. On the other hand, if they fill their days with worship, godly friendships, and service to others, they grow stronger and their victory becomes permanent.

Conclusion

Deliverance is your new position in Christ. Victory is your new lifestyle in Him. You were not set free to live in fear of falling again. You were set free to demonstrate the power of God in your daily life. Let your confession be this: “Christ in me is my victory, and me in Christ is my deliverance.” As long as you stay in Him and let Him live through you, your freedom will not only last—it will multiply.

It is not about striving in our strength but resting in His presence. The more we allow Christ to live through us, the more victorious our lives become. Deliverance places us in Christ, and victory comes when Christ lives and reigns in us daily. Therefore, the secret to sustaining deliverance and walking in victory is abiding. Jesus said in John 15:4, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine.” When we stay connected to Christ, we naturally bear the fruit of victory.
