“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony, and they loved not their lives unto the death.” (Revelation 12:11, KJV)

But who is the “him” referenced in this verse? We find the answer in Revelation 12:9, which identifies this figure as “the great dragon,” also called the serpent, the devil, and Satan. He is the adversary of God and humanity, cast down from heaven. The term “dragon” can be broken into drag and on, representing issues that persist and drag on endlessly, such as cycles of failure, generational patterns, illnesses, or other stubborn obstacles. How do we overcome and overpower these ongoing struggles and challenges? Revelation 12:11 gives us a clear three-part strategy to slay these “dragons” in our lives and break free from what has held us captive for so long.

#1 – Divine Intervention

The first tool for overcoming the dragon is the blood of the Lamb. This refers to the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). His blood was shed to redeem humanity and grant us victory over sin, death, and Satan. The blood of Jesus is not just a theological concept; it is a powerful spiritual weapon. Hebrews 9:14 tells us that through His blood, our consciences are cleansed, freeing us to serve the living God.

When applied by faith, the blood of Jesus breaks every chain that binds us. Just as the Israelites applied the blood of a lamb to their doorposts during the first Passover (Exodus 12:13), we too must apply the blood of Jesus to the doorposts of our lives through prayer and declaration. The dragon cannot stand against the covering and protection that the blood of Jesus provides. Whatever “drag-on” issues have persisted—be it addiction, sickness, or generational curses—can be broken under the authority of the blood of the Lamb.

#2 – Personal Testimony

The second strategy is “the word of their testimony.” Testimony is a declaration of God’s faithfulness, power, and victory in our lives. It is both a weapon and a declaration of war against the lies of the enemy. Revelation 19:10 says that “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy,” meaning that when we share our testimony, we not only recount what God has done but also proclaim what He can do again.

The enemy thrives on silence and fear. He wants to rob us of our voice and prevent us from declaring God’s goodness. Psalm 107:2 encourages us, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemy.” Sharing our testimony not only glorifies God but also builds faith in others and ourselves. It is a reminder of God’s faithfulness and a declaration that the same God who delivered us before can do it again.

Even in the face of ongoing struggles, boldly proclaiming God’s promises can dismantle the lies of the dragon. The power of life and death is in the tongue (Proverbs 18:21), and when we align our words with God’s truth, the dragon loses its grip.

#3 – Unwavering Faith

The final strategy is a posture of unwavering devotion to Jesus, even in the face of death. The phrase “they loved not their lives unto the death” speaks of a level of commitment that prioritizes obedience to God above personal safety or comfort. This echoes Jesus’ call to His disciples in Matthew 16:24: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

Loving Jesus above all else disarms the dragon’s greatest weapon: the fear of death. Hebrews 2:14-15 explains that through His death, Jesus destroyed the one who held the power of death and freed those who lived in fear of it. When believers refuse to bow to fear, even in the face of death, they render the enemy powerless.

This kind of devotion may seem daunting, but it is fueled by the hope of eternal life and the assurance that our victory is secure in Christ. Romans 8:37 reminds us that “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Whether the dragon takes the form of persecution, trials, or personal battles, our willingness to stand firm for Jesus demonstrates the ultimate triumph of faith over fear.

In conclusion, Revelation 12:11 offers a battle plan that equips every believer to slay the dragons in their life. These principles are not theoretical; they are weapons that have been proven in the lives of countless believers throughout history. Therefore, identify your dragon, apply the blood, declare your testimony, and stand firm in your faith. Victory is already yours through Jesus Christ (1 John 5:4; Colossians 2:15; Romans 8:37). The dragon has been defeated, and his hold over your life is broken. It’s time to step into the freedom and victory that God has promised you.
