The Speakings of an Altar

Altars speak in two dimensions:

Today, the purpose of this blog post is twofold:

  1. To help you recognize when an altar is speaking into your life, whether positively or negatively.
  2. To equip you with practical steps to respond to these speakings.

#1 – Recognizing When an Altar is Speaking for or Against You

Allow me to remind you that in this series of teachings, we are trying to unpack and understand the concept of ‘The Science of Altars’.

The term “science” in this context refers to the systematic study of patterns behind certain occurrences.

Just as science explores the laws and principles governing the patterns in the physical world, the study of altars helps us explain patterns from the spiritual realm.

A pattern is a repeated sequence of events, behaviors, or elements that occur in a predictable manner.

That means, any spiritual pattern in your life, whether it manifests as repeated blessings or ongoing struggles, can often be traced back to the voice of an altar.

For instance, when the negative patterns below are present in your life, they are an indication that an altar is actively speaking negatively against your life:

A] Premature Deaths

  • Altars can speak death over successive generations, creating a cycle of premature death.
  • In Mark 12:18-23 we see a story where every man married to the woman in the story died without leaving an heir.
  • Genesis 38:6-11 tells of a family whose sons died prematurely.

B] Failed Marriages

  • Repeated relationship failures may indicate an altar that opposes marital harmony.
  • The woman at the well in John 4:16-18, who had five failed marriages, is an example of a pattern of the inability to have marital success.

C] Poverty and Oppression

  • If you find your efforts fading instead of flourishing, an altar may be speaking against your success.
  • In Judges 6:3-4, the Israelites planted crops only to have them destroyed by their enemies, leaving them with nothing.
  • This cycle of poverty and oppression suggests the presence of an altar that works against financial prosperity.

D] Wandering Spirit

  • If you find yourself continually moving in circles without progress, it may be an altar at work.
  • The Israelites’ 40 years of wandering in the desert [Deuteronomy 2:3] is an example of being in a state of confusion and aimlessness.

E] Barrenness

  • Barrenness is the state of opposed fruitfulness.
  • Psalms 1:3 calls it the state of ‘fading’ when you wither or cast off your fruits in seasons where you should bring them forth.
  • In Malachi 3:11 a personality called the ‘devourer’ is revealed, and his curriculum vitae is that he can cause those who are outside the cover of God to be unfruitful.
  • Sarah, Rebekah, and Rachel each faced extended periods of barrenness [Genesis 16:1-2; Genesis 25:21; Genesis 30:1]. This barrenness was not just physical but symbolic of blocked destinies.

F] Prolonged Battles

  • The presence of prolonged struggles may indicate an altar that speaks of ongoing difficulty.
  • The woman with the issue of blood [Luke 8:43-48] battled her condition for 12 years.
  • In John 5:1-15, a man suffered from an infirmity for 38 years.
  • Both of these prolonged illnesses could not be healed until Jesus intervened, indicating the presence of a spiritual force working against their health.

G] Scent of Reproach and Disfavor

  • You either carry a scent of favor or disfavor.
  • That is either the odor of death or life as Apostle Paul puts it in 2 Corinthians 2:16.
  • Remember the curriculum vitae of Jesus in Luke 2:52 was that he grew with favor from both men and God.
  • Esau, although the firstborn and the rightful heir, disfavor was at work from his birth for it was written that the older will serve the younger [Genesis 25:23]. Possibly because of this decree, eventually, Esau lost his birthright to Jacob. In fact, in Genesis 27:27 we see that Isaac blessed Jacob although he was in doubt that he was not Esau because of his scent, which he said was like the smell of a field that God has already blessed.
  • Jeremiah 48:11 tells of how Moab was at ease without experiencing any oppressions or captivity for his scent had not changed.

H] Decreed Curses

  • A curse is any pronounced word of judgment by anybody in a position of spiritual authority.
  • For instance, Jacob pronounced a curse over his son Reuben in Genesis 49:3-4, which led the tribe of Reuben to experience repeated cycles of failure. It was only through Moses’ intercession that this curse was broken [Deuteronomy 33:6].
  • The curse pronounced by Joshua on anyone who would rebuild Jericho [Joshua 6:26] was fulfilled when Hiel of Bethel lost his sons [1 Kings 16:34].

I] Accident Prone

  • Frequent accidents or close calls may indicate an altar of destruction at work in your life.
  • Job experienced a series of catastrophic events as a result of a spiritual challenge between God and Satan [Job 1:13-19].
  • This is an indication that spiritual forces can influence physical calamities.

J] Lack of Conception/Miscarriages

  • Chronic inability to conceive or frequent miscarriages may point to an altar that opposes life and fruitfulness.
  • In Genesis 30:1-2, Rachel experienced difficulty conceiving while her sister Leah bore children easily.
  • While the Bible doesn’t directly mention an altar, her prolonged inability to conceive and subsequent blessing can be seen as spiritual forces at work, possibly connected to her father’s idolatry [Genesis 31:19].

K] Strange Dreams

  • Repeated dreams involving negative symbols, such as being followed by a madman, may indicate an altar of madness or confusion speaking into your life.
  • In Genesis 41, Pharaoh experienced troubling dreams, which Joseph interpreted revealing that they were messages from God about future events.
  • This example shows that repeated, disturbing dreams can be a form of spiritual communication, either from God or other spiritual forces.

L] Cycles of Addictions & Bondage

  • Throughout the Book of Judges, the Israelites repeatedly fell into cycles of idolatry, bondage, and deliverance [Judges 2:10-19].
  • These cycles could be seen as the result of spiritual altars that led them back into sin and oppression, despite their initial deliverance.

M] Chronic Unemployment or Lack of Promotion

  • Repeated failures to find or keep a job, or to advance, might indicate a spiritual blockade.
  • Nebuchadnezzar’s Humbling: In Daniel 4:28-37, King Nebuchadnezzar was humbled by God and lost his kingdom for a period due to his pride.
  • While this is a unique case, it shows that spiritual forces can affect one’s career and status.

N] Family Disunity and Conflict

  • In the family of Jacob there was constant strife between Jacob’s wives, Leah and Rachel, and later among his sons [Genesis 37:4, 12-36].
  • This may be an illustration of how spiritual forces, possibly rooted in idolatry or unresolved sins, can create ongoing discord and division within a family.

O] Generational Sin

  • Both David and his son Solomon struggled with issues related to lust and women [2 Samuel 11, 1 Kings 11:1-8].
  • Both Abraham and his son Isaac struggled with lying about their wives to protect themselves [Genesis 12:10-20] & [Genesis 26:7-11].
  • This generational pattern suggests the presence of a spiritual force or altar influencing similar sinful behavior across generations.

P] Unfulfilled Potential or Unfinished Projects

  • The inability to finish projects or fulfill your destiny may be a sign of a spiritual mark of failure or judgment over your life.
  • Cain, marked by God [Genesis 4:15], carried a spiritual mark that caused the ground to reject his efforts.
  • Although Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, he was not allowed to enter the Promised Land due to disobedience [Deuteronomy 34:1-4].
  • Based on these examples it’s possible to be marked as ‘rejected’, ‘disqualified’, or ‘unaccepted’ for specific tasks by a spiritual force, preventing the completion of destiny or project.
  • Invisible marks can manifest as failure in endeavors that should otherwise succeed.

#2 – Responding to the Speakings of an Altar

A] Responding to the Positive Speakings

Each time you identify positive cycles in your life, whether it’s a season of fruitfulness, favor, or breakthrough, respond by raising an altar where you bring these two spiritual sacrifices — thanksgiving and gratitude — as we see in the examples of:

  • Noah built an altar after the flood in Genesis 8:20
  • King Jehoshaphat’s After the miraculous victory in 2 Chronicles 20, his response was to raise an altar of thanksgiving.
  • Jacob’s encounter with Esau ended in peace, prompting him to build an altar in Genesis 33:20.

A daily life of gratitude is an altar, where the sacrifice of thanksgiving is pleasing to God, according to Psalms 100:4-5.

  • Recognize God’s hand in your life’s blessings, whether it’s your home, car, or job, and offer thanks continually.
  • Raising these spiritual altars ensures that God’s blessings continue to flow.
  • Sometimes even don’t wait for promises to be fulfilled before giving thanks.
  • Follow the example of Abraham, who worshipped God in anticipation of His promises [Genesis 12:7].
  • This kind of faith-filled thanksgiving strengthens your trust in God’s future provision.

[B] Responding to the Negative Speakings

We cannot turn a blind eye against the injustices of the negative speakings of altars because:

  • Christ has already secured our victory over evil altars and their priests through His work on the cross. Colossians 2:15 declares that Jesus disarmed the powers and authorities that seek to keep us bound. We must appropriate this victory by standing in our authority in Christ.
  • Isaiah 60:1 reminds us that it’s our time to arise and shine. Do you know why? Psalms 23:4 is the answer. When the light of God’s presence shines, darkness is turned into shadows, and the power of any negative altar is diminished. Jesus Christ is the light that lighteth every man [John 1:9] and he is the God in us through the person of the Holy Spirit [1 Corinthians 6:17].
  • God sent His Word—Jesus Christ—to heal and deliver us from destruction [Psalm 107:20]. These negative patterns are the very destructions from which Christ has already paid to deliver us.

Now that we know why we need to wage war against evil altars with negative speakings, how do you do it?
