Google defines deliverance as “the act of saving someone from harm, danger, or an unpleasant situation.” As I read through all the other definitions, I noticed a repetition of these keywords: salvation, rescue, liberation, and freedom. As I meditated on these keywords, the verse that kept coming to mind is;
2 Corinthians 3:17 (“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”)
And this reveals that the ministry of deliverance reveals the heart of God. He is a God who wants His people free, whole, restored, and walking in truth. In this blog post, we shall talk about the 5 Biblical Truths About the Deliverance Ministry, which are:
- Deliverance Is a Ministry Pioneered by Jesus and Continued by the Holy Spirit
- Deliverance is a Mandate for every believer — Not a Gift or Office
- Deliverance Is More Than Casting Out Demons
- Deliverance Deals With Four Realms of Spiritual Battle
- Deliverance Is a Ministry of Love
Deliverance Is a Ministry Pioneered by Jesus and Continued by the Holy Spirit
Everything Jesus did pointed to freedom. The Gospels show that Jesus prioritized liberation over traditions, opinions, and comfort. Jesus Did Not Care About Social Pressure or Human Systems, as supported by:
- He did not care about commotion – Healing the paralyzed man lowered through the roof in Mark 2:1-12
- He did not care about religious laws – Healing on the Sabbath in Luke 13:10-17
- He did not care about public opinion – Eating with tax collectors and sinners in Luke 5:29-32
- He did not fear confronting demons publicly – Cast out an unclean spirit in the synagogue in Mark 1:23-27
- He did not avoid the untouchable or rejected – Touched the leper in Mark 1:40-45
Jesus cared more About People’s Freedom and Liberation. This was His divine assignment, the reason he was sent on Earth and anointed by God for as supported by:
- Luke 4:18 — “He has anointed Me… to proclaim liberty to the captives.”
- Acts 10:38 — “He went around doing good and destroying the works of the devil.”
- John 10:10 – “I have come so you may have life in abundance”
- 1 John 3:8 – “He was manifested to destroy the works of the devil”
- Matthew 8:16 – “He cast out spirits with His Word and healed all who were sick.” — Jesus did not just preach; he healed, cast out demons, and restored the lost.
This mission continues through:
- The Holy Spirit: When accused of casting out demons by Beelzebul, Jesus said it was done “by the finger of God” (Luke 11:20), a reference to the Holy Spirit. The more you walk with the Spirit, the more you naturally desire to see people set free, as supported by Acts 1:1-2; Isaiah 53:8-10.
- Every Believer – Today, the Holy Spirit partners with believers to continue where Jesus left as written in Psalms 110:1-3. Moreover, Jesus commanded His followers to continue His works: “Heal the sick… cleanse lepers… cast out demons.” — Matthew 10:7-8
This leads to the second truth.
Deliverance Is a Mandate — Not a Gift or Office
Deliverance is NOT listed as a:
- Spiritual gift (1 Corinthians 12),
- Fivefold office (Ephesians 4:11), or
- Special calling for a select few.
Deliverance is a sign of true believers.
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” — (Mark 16:17-18, KJV)
It is not just for pastors, prophets, or deliverance ministers; it is for all Christians who believe in the finished work of the cross – The Believers.
This means that deliverance is a kingdom function demonstrating that the Kingdom of God has come near (Matthew 6:10; 1 Corinthians 4:20).
This leads to the third truth.
Deliverance Is More Than Casting Out Demons
Jesus gave five assignments in Matthew 10:7-8:
“And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.”
- Gospel Exposure — preach, teach, disciple
- Healing — physical and emotional
- Revival — raise the dead
- Cleansing — cleanse lepers
- Exorcism — cast out demons
This means the deliverance ministry has four major pillars:
- Teaching — Exposing Truth
- Healing — Restoring Bodies and Emotions
- Restoration — Reviving lives, hope, and identity
- Exorcism — Driving out unclean spirits
Therefore, deliverance is holistic — spirit, soul, and body, and this leads us to point four.
Deliverance Deals With Four Realms of Spiritual Battles
- Flesh – Our fallen nature, broken mindsets, wrong thinking. Truth and teaching break these strongholds of the mind (Romans 12:2; 2 Corinthians 10:1-5). “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41).
- Body – Sickness, infirmity, affliction. Jesus healed multitudes out of compassion (Matthew 14:14). “This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: ‘He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.'” (Matthew 8:17)
- World – Environmental influence, pain from life, wandering from God — illustrated in the parables of: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son (Luke 15). “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.” (1 John 5:19)
- Unclean Spirits – Demons, fallen angels, witchcraft, and satanic oppression (Ephesians 6:12). “Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” (Revelation 12:12)
A complete deliverance ministry must address all four, not just demons.
This leads us to the final point.
Deliverance Is a Ministry of Love
Deliverance flows from love — not fear, drama, or performance. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” — John 14:15. When we do deliverance, we partner with the Holy Spirit — the gentle “finger of God” — to bring: healing, freedom, restoration, and transformation in people’s lives.
Therefore, deliverance is…
✓ the ministry of Jesus,
✓ the mandate of believers,
✓ the work of the Holy Spirit,
✓ the expression of God’s love in action.
In the next teaching, we will look at 7 case studies of deliverances by Jesus and extract powerful lessons for every believer who wants to walk in spiritual authority.
